Assistant / Associate Professor of Exotic & Zoo Animal Medicine | Mountain West Region

A College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking faculty member in Exotic and Zoo Animal Medicine. This is a unique opportunity to join a founding academic team and help build an innovative, student-centered veterinary program designed to prepare graduates for the evolving demands of the profession.

Position Overview

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, curriculum development, and research within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. This role offers the opportunity to shape a dynamic academic program while mentoring future veterinarians in the care of exotic, zoological, and non-traditional species.

Faculty will collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to create and continuously refine a curriculum grounded in clinical excellence and real-world application.

Teaching & Academic Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering lectures and facilitating small group instruction in exotic and zoo animal medicine
  • Developing and enhancing course materials, assessments, and learning resources
  • Contributing to curriculum design and ongoing academic improvement
  • Mentoring Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and graduate students
  • Supporting student learning in clinical and applied veterinary sciences

Research & Scholarly Activity

Faculty are expected to maintain an active and collaborative research program. Areas of emphasis may include:

  • Exotic and zoological animal health
  • Wildlife and Conservation Medicine
  • One Health initiatives
  • Zoonotic and emerging diseases
  • Public Health and environmental health

Additional expectations include:

  • Conducting independent and interdisciplinary research
  • Engaging students in research and scholarly activities
  • Collaborating with faculty across departments
  • Contributing to peer-reviewed publications and academic advancement

Service & Institutional Engagement

Faculty members are expected to participate in institutional service, including:

  • Faculty Senate participation
  • Departmental meetings and faculty evaluations
  • College and university committees
  • Academic program development and interdisciplinary initiatives

Compensation

Annual Salary Range: $149,864 – $196,539 (DOE)

Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, education, and academic rank through the institutional review process.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited institution

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board eligibility or board certification (preferred)
  • Experience or strong interest in Exotic and Zoo Animal Medicine research
  • Background in wildlife, zoological, or non-traditional species care
